2. STCW COURSES

                                                               STCW COURSES

WHO
All persons desirous of being employed on merchant ships must undergo PSM courses, irrespective of the rank in which they intend to join.

The PSM dept conducts 6 courses in University campus out of which 4 are mandatory to every person applying for CDC. The 5th course is compulsory for sailing onboard and 6th course is compulsory for sailing on tankers.

WHY
IMO which is the maritime arm of United Nations made it mandatory for all prospective seafarers to undergo these courses. The requirements of PSM courses (prerequisites, syllabus, duration) are as per IMO (over 160 countries have ratified these courses). The courses are monitored closely by DG Shipping requiring us to send batch wise details.

Attendance & Pass marks
100% attendance is compulsory.  Candidates who fail to complete the course successfully will have to pay the course fees in full and “REDO” the course.

Candidates must note that most of the times the courses run to “maximum approved strength” and one may have to wait for a long time to get a seat.
FACULTY
In AMET Theory subjects are taught by experienced senior officers

EXAM
At the end of each course, depending on the course, the candidate has to undergo theory (paper based / computer based) and practical exam. Pass mark is 60%.

Candidates who fail in the exam will be given an opportunity to rewrite the exam on producing a “reappear” fee receipt of Rs. 100.

If a candidate fails in his 2nd attempt, the course has to be repeated all over again by paying full course fees and attending the course.

INDoS certificate is issued by the maritime administration and to facilitate confirming the genuineness of the documents by several stake holders, Generally cadets are in possession of this cert within 3 months of joining AMET. Students are advised to apply for INDoS number a semester before they are scheduled to do the STCW courses.

In case of  corrections (name / DOB) are required in the INDoS certificate, get them  corrected immediately.  INDoS is a must before we can issue a STCW Certificate.
INDoS number is required to be printed in each of the above mentioned certificate. the PSM certificates are issued in the name mentioned in INDoS. Hence the candidates should ensure that the details mentioned in the INDoS certificate are correct.

Medical Certificate
For undergoing FPFF and PST courses, valid medical certificate is a prerequisite,, considering that physical activity ( wearing SCBA, Jumping into water from a height) is involved in these two courses.

PPE
On the second day of FPFF course participants must wear boiler suits and safety shoes without which they will not be permitted to undergo the training.
Similarly on the second day of PST course they must wear boiler suits.
